The Editio Critica Maior (ECM), edited by the Institute for New Testament Textual Research (INTF), is the most comprehensive critical edition of the Greek New Testament. According to the German Bible Society, the ECM “seeks to reconstruct the earliest attainable text of the New Testament by drawing on the entire manuscript tradition, early versions, and patristic citations. The ECM thus provides both a fundamental resource for scholarly research and the textual basis for future editions such as the Nestle-Aland and the UBS Greek New Testament.”
To date, ECM volumes have been published for the Catholic Epistles (1997), Acts (2015), Mark (2021), and Revelation (2024). The volume on Matthew is scheduled to release later this year. Many scholars may wonder how to use the valuable tools of the ECM for exegesis and classroom instruction.
Our director, Dr. Quarles, recently presented a paper on the use of the ECM volume of Matthew in the classroom.The presentation, embedded on this page and also available on the International Greek New Testament Project’s YouTube channel, introduces the online resources associated with ECM Matthew and provides step-by-step guidance for navigating the digital edition. We hope this video helps viewers better understand and utilize this significant development in New Testament textual criticism.
